How to test a prophet

There are two ways to test a prophet - by man's opinions or by the Bible. Much of what the critics have said in regards to Ernie we have found to be unbiblical. For example:

1. Angels or people don't walk through walls in the Bible or Spirit of Prophecy
2. We only need the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy
3. Angels don't transform themselves into human form
4. The Herald could not have watched Jesus grow in the womb of Mary
5. Angels don't have dimples
6. God's people are not ready for this kind of test

There was a time when God's people could give you clear Bible statements on how to test a prophet, particularly in regards to Ellen White. It seems that time has gone and now God's people as a whole simply reject the messenger because they don't like the message. This applies not only to Ernie, but also Ellen White.

So how do we test a prophet? We need to know this as Jesus said there would be false prophets in the last days (Matthew 24:24).

False prophets will give false predictions of Jesus' second coming

"Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not." - Matthew 24:23-26

A true prophet will confess Christ came in the flesh

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." - 1 John 4:1-3

A prophet will not contradict the Bible

"To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." - Isaiah 8:20

A prophet will not lead you away from God

"If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him." - Deuteronomy 13:1-4

What a prophet says must come to pass

"But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him." Deuteronomy 18:20-22

True prophets will bear good fruit

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit." - Matthew 7:15-17

Prophets will not flatter you

"Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD." - Jeremiah 23:16

In the last days old men will have dreams, young people will receive visions

"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:" - Joel 2:28
